Encaustic en plein air can be a bit tricky. I don't think park rangers would be too happy with me brandishing a blow torch! Here is a little bit of my process. So often I forget to clue people in on how I do what I do. Let me know if you would like to know more!
Look! A party favor of sorts! I uploaded a no frills video, meaning no editing- just me, my mac and my pastels... yikes! Grab your own pastels or other paints and create a quick impressionist painting à la Renoir!
A Week at the Seashore
The Inaugural Retreat
January 29- February 5
4 days of making art with me + 2 days of making art with the amazing and lovely Jeanne Oliver + 7 nights in a newly restored 1930's Corona del Mar beach house = 1 fantabulous time!
( ...and all you need to pack is a pair of sunglasses.. and I guess some clothes...)
Who is this for? For YOU, of course; whether you are a hobby artist, a professional or just someone who colored as a child and is curious to do more. I am keeping my retreats small to be able to give all of the personal hands on help you want in a variety of mediums, to create the perfect fit for YOU.
What does this include?
Did you ever find yourself rolling your eyes at someone's suggestion that you should get away, take some time off, relax a bit...? Put me at the head of that line and with the biggest smirk as I rattle off my long to do list and endless table of people counting on me. I wear it like a badge of honor. And yet I know this is ridiculous. I know that I am not indispensable. I also know that I am on a collision course for major burnout. The remedy is something God has modeled for us in the beginning: on the seventh day He rested. Rest is so important to thriving and living this life, that The Creator of the Universe commanded us to set a day aside, keep holy the sabbath.
So many of us, myself included, use that day for cramming in all of the chores that didn't get done all week- right after church... I'm not judging or condemning. Life is busy. I get it. I just wish it weren't so.
This is not a shameless plug for you to come to my art retreat and get your much deserved rest (ok, maybe a smidgen) - but more of a let me try to understand the several conversations I had over the last several days; the ones with people who truly want to attend the art retreat, but just don't have a whole weekend to devote to it. Could we please just come on Sunday? Hmm.. setting aside the one day to do something special and rejuvenating, something fun and uplifting and dare I say restful? If one day is what you have; if you are willing to put your to-dos over to Saturday- then by all means, come and share your sabbath with us. I am putting the one day- Sunday option in the shopping cart, and encourage you to jump in and grab a spot before they're full.
Regardless of how you spend your October 26th- my hope is that you truly take a day each week- even half a day and kick your feet up... do something special. Rest. And if you see me doing a mad dash through the grocery store on Sunday, can you just give me a glare... or an understanding smile.... grace. I'll try to do the same.
Blessings on your week!
Art and Reflection, a Women's Retreat in Kim's Garden
Announcing the first of what I'm hoping will be a tradition- A fall art retreat for women in the heart of the Sonoma County wine country! The harvest is over. The crazy busy holidays are coming at us at breakneck speed. Why not take a bit of time to renew and recharge for what lies ahead? Kim's Garden is just the place. We will be featuring three artists to gently guide even the most novice of artists into some fun projects to make and take home. Taste the local foods and wines, anticipate warm friendship, and times for rest and reflection in the nooks and crannies of this beautiful spot of Heaven on Earth. This event will be limited to the first 20 to sign up- (we want you to spoil you with attention!) so grab a spot now!
Art and Reflection
October 25-26, 2014
Sunday worship 9:30-11:00 followed by brunch and art until 4:00
The details and schedule to follow but for now plan on playing with a variety of mediums as well as having three finished pieces to take home.
Sonoma County's premier mixed media artist, Christa Thomas will be there!
And yes, you've been asking for it: I'm finally going to teach a lesson in encaustics! So are you the type tempted to play with the drippy candle wax in a restaurant? ... Then this is the place for you!
Sunday will include a worship in color session in the morning followed by brunch and then a few more surprises. I can't wait to fill you in! Looking forward to playing in paint, creating, eating, drinking, laughing and so much fun!
Seriously, this might be the last restful weekend you have between now and New Years. *GRIN* Grab it while you can!
*Includes lunch, snacks, wine and beverages on Saturday plus brunch and treats on Sunday as well as all of the art supplies needed to complete three projects and play a bit too! It does not include dinner or accommodations, but we would be happy to help you with local hotel or bed and breakfast advice.
So this Saturday a few of us are gathering in my friend, Kim's garden to paint and play with paint and share and laugh and enjoy God's blessings. It's my first "official" workshop of this nature. I am so excited for the friends that have signed up, -still have room for more. The surprise? I have decided that since you are my friends, (and therefore my guinea pigs to try this out on) I am cutting the price in half- 20-20-20. Instead of the $120 (which I realize seems like a lot- but is actually a lot less than most) If you can do 20 for supplies, 20 for lunch (wine included!), and 20 for our gracious host, Kim... then I will be happy just having the chance to try out my teaching skills on you. In return, I would love your feedback and possible recommendation for future endeavors. Does this sound good?
If you want to be part of this- sign up quickly. Registration closes on Tuesday.
Still want to be part of the lucky drawing and do this all for free? Click here to learn more- I'll be drawing the winner Sunday night. Questions? Feel free to contact me. I'm actually home! See you Saturday!
I am so looking forward to spending the day in my friend's garden! Kim Ramirez and her husband, Jose, have spent 17 years creating this beautiful space, cultivating God's earth, carving out paths and tucking in whimsy at every turn. It is a peaceful spot of renewal and quiet times with Jesus, with a background soundtrack of bird songs and the whispers of butterflies... This has become one of my favorite places to be and to paint.
Join me on Saturday, August 30, from 10:00-2:00 for a lovely day of painting under blue skies surrounded by God's creation.
Lunch and supplies are included. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. Space is limited for the upmost attention and care.

I am so looking forward to spending time with you!
God bless your day!
